Congratulations to Deb Wrye on being selected as the January Teacher of the Month for Salem Community Schools.

Deb was selected because she received a very heartfelt nomination about her teaching of her students and preparing them for high school and even college.

Here is an exert from one parent’s letter nominating Wrye:

Bradie M. Shrum Principal Brent Minton, SMS Principal Ray Oppel, Deb Wrye and Becky White

“She has been an amazingly wonderful influence in the lives of my kid’s. Additionally, she has taught all three of my kid’s to research, think critically, and write argumentatively. [My children] have thrived under her guidance the past three years in her social studies classes, and I am truly sad Mrs. Wrye cannot follow them to high school … In addition to all this, Mrs. Wrye has provided my children (and so many others) with so many experiences from field trips to mock trials to ancient Roman games to food from other cultures and so much more. She has probably spent more on my kids than I have in school supplies. My kids have had some great teachers, but not many can come close to the impact Mrs. Wrye has had on them.”

Deb is a teacher at Salem Middle School.

One nomination said that Deb works hard and cares about her students. She infuses her love of social studies with humor and with work that will help her students learn.

A former student said that Mrs. Wrye was her favorite teacher and facilitated her love for learning about social studies and politics.

“We would like to thank Becky White of WSLM, Papa John’s, and Linck’s Clothing on the prizes awarded to Deb for her award,” said Bradie Shrum Elementary Principal Brent Minton. “She received a certificate, t-shirt, Yeti Cup, and Cinnamon Pull Aparts. Also, we would like to thank Roxanne Nantz for her sponsorship of a prize to the Teacher of the Month.”

The first picture is of my 4th great uncle, (maternal side), William Penn Trueblood, (1800-1880), brother to my 4th great grandmother, Margaret “Peggy” Trueblood, wife of Jehosophat Morris.

William migrated to Washington County at 15 years of age with his parents and siblings, who were Quakers, settling in the Old Blue River Friends Community.

William was primarily a farmer, but secretly, he was also the Head of the Washington County Underground Railroad Advisory Board, a station master and conductor, on our county’s very successful operation for assisting fugitive slaves.

William was described as methodically intelligent, stoic, honest and faithful.

The scope of his importance to the overall operation will never be fully understood, but cannot be understated, when looking at the overall success the route had through the county.

The 2nd picture is of his home, this he shared with his wife Ann White, where they had 7 children.

This home constructed in the early 1850’s is still standing today, I have toured it!, it is in the center of the field just north of the Quaker Orthodox Church and is currently a rental property.

This information and more will be in the new UGRR display at the Stevens Museum, opening in March.

REDS TRADE PHILLIPS TO BRAVES FOR TWO PITCHERS

Cincinnati Reds President of Baseball Operations, General Manager Dick Williams today announced the acquisitions of LHP Andrew McKirahan and RHP Carlos Portuondo from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for 2B Brandon Phillips.

“We appreciate Brandon’s contributions to our organization,” Williams said. “He excited our fan base and was an important part of several seasons of winning Reds baseball. We wish him well with this next opportunity.”

McKirahan, 27, originally was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 21st round of the 2011 first-year player draft. He was taken by the Miami Marlins in the December 2014 Rule 5 Draft and on April 1, 2015 was claimed off waivers by the Braves.

McKirahan has posted a sterling 2.20 ERA in 96 career minor league appearances. He pitched in 27 games for the Braves in 2015 but missed the entire 2016 season recovering from “Tommy John” surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

Portuondo, 29, was signed by the Braves in February 2016 as an international free agent from Cuba, where he made 44 starts and 81 relief appearances for Santiago in Cuba Serie Nacional. He spent last season in the minor leagues pitching for Atlanta’s Class A affiliate at Carolina and Class AAA club at Gwinnett.

Phillips, 35, was acquired from the Cleveland Indians in April 2006. He is a 3-time National League All-Star and recipient of 4 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards and the 2011 Louisville Silver Slugger Award.

Cubans Arrested For Walmart Credit Card Scam

A Cuban man and woman were arrested last week for using stolen credit cards to purchase and reload Walmart gift cards, stealing thousands of dollars over the past few months.

A Walmart employee matched the fraudulent gift cards to video of the transactions and alerted the Salem Police Department on Jan. 25.

Greisis De La Paz Ochoa and Miguel Martinez Gonzales are behind bars.

Court records say they hit Walmarts up and down I-65 from Salem to Corydon, Seymour to Scottsburg, and the Bashford Manor store in Louisville.

U.S. Secret Service agents have joined the investigation, believing this same team may be tied to skimmers and stolen credit and debit card information throughout the region, including those recently reported in Greenville and Henryville.

According to SPD Major Detective Scott Ratts, Gonzales said he did it “because he has kids in Cuba and needed the money.”

Police believe there was a team stealing anywhere from four thousand to seven thousand dollars a day.

Ratts said WSLM Listeners need to check their bank accounts and see if there are any unauthorized uses.

“If there is, please call the Salem Police Department at 812.883.5100,” he noted.

On or about December 30, 2017, Alisha Mills, general manager at the Salem Wal-Mart, contacted the Salem Police Department to report that two Hispanic males and one Hispanic female used a stolen credit card to reload a Wal-Mart gift cards through the Wal-Mart self check-out.

Mills advised that she could determine that the credit card number used to purchase the Wal-Mart gift cards was stolen because the numbers had been flagged by the credit card companies as belonging to stolen cards and had received reports from victims stating their credit cards had been fraudulently used at the Salem Walmart.

Mills was able to run the Wal-Mart gift card numbers loaded at the Salem Wal-Mart and determined using the Wal-Mart electronic inventory system that the same cards had been reloaded at other Wal-Mart stores including Corydon, Seymour, Scottsburg, and the Wal-Mart at the Bashford Manor Mall in Kentucky.

At the Bashford Manor Wal-Mart, the Wal-Mart gift cards were used to transfer money to a pre-paid credit card.

Mills advised that Wal-Mart security video confirmed that the same individuals returned to the Salem Wal-Mart several times over the following few weeks conducting the same activity.

On or about January 25, 2017 a Hispanic male and a Hispanic female entered the Wal-Mart store, and Wal-Mart employees recognized the male and female as individuals who had previously been in the store using stolen credit card data to purchase Wal-Mart gift cards.

Wal-Mart security employees observed the female use stolen credit card data to purchase Wal-Mart gift cards.

Reports run later indicate that the Hispanic female used stolen credit card information to purchase $5.09 in physical items and transferred $60 to a Wal-Mart gift card (fraud).

The Hispanic female also ran an additional card number, but it was declined, so no purchase or transfer was made (theft).

Cameras indicated she then left the store and waited in a silver Lincoln sedan.

The male proceeded to use stolen credit card data to make purchases and monetary transfers. The Hispanic male did the following:

  • Charged $63.21 to a credit card number belonging to Christopher Welch. This charge involved the purchase of a t-shirt for $3.21 and $60.00 loaded to a Wal-Mart gift card. (fraud)
  • Charged $61.34 to a credit card number belonging to Kevin McGill. $1.34 for a lemonade, and a $60 monetary transfer to a Wal-Mart gift card.  (fraud)
  • Made eight attempted transactions on credit card numbers that were declined. (theft).

During this activity, Wal-Mart employees contacted the Salem Police Department and your affiant responded.

Ratts said he approached the Hispanic male and placed him into custody.   At that time, he observed the silver Lincoln sedan speed away.

Salem Police Department Detective, Ronnie Mays, later stopped the silver Lincoln sedan on State Road 56 in Salem.

In a search incident to the arrest of the male, Ratts retrieved his wallet, which was full of Wal-Mart gift cards.

The Hispanic male was advised of his rights through an interpreter.  The Hispanic male stated that the reason he did it is because he has kids in Cuba and needed the money.

The Hispanic female was also interviewed after being advised of her rights. The Hispanic female stated that she did not have any cards on her.

The Hispanic Male had multiple identification cards with what appeared to be his photograph, but with different names.

The Hispanic female presented an identification card she claimed was hers.

The photograph on the identification card does not appear to be the Hispanic female we have in custody.

All of which gives me probable cause to believe that the Hispanic female has committed one count of Fraud, as level 6 felony, one count of

Attempted Fraud, as Level 6 felony, and one count of Corrupt Business Influence, a Level 5 Felony.

The Hispanic male committed eight counts of Attempted Fraud, a level six felony, one count of Fraud as a Level 6 Felony, and one count of Corrupt Business Influence, a Level 5 Felony.

Salem Police ran the electronic fingerprint check of both subjects and the male came back a positive ID to Miguel Martinez-Gonzalez from Cuba and the female was identified as Greisis De La Paz-Ocha from Cuba.

A search of the vehicle she was driving revealed several cloned credit cards and several Walmart gift cards.

A Bedford teenager was charged with numerous drug related felonies after being pulled over just outside of Loogootee Saturday morning.

Arrested and Charged was Garret W.S. Diehl, 18, Bedford, IN.

He was charged with:
– Operating While Intoxicated – Minor Passenger in the Vehicle, Level 6 Felony
– Maintaining a Common Nuisance, Level 6 Felony
– Neglect of a Dependent, Level 6 Felony
– Possession of Marijuana, Class B Misdemeanor
– Operating While Intoxicated – Controlled Substance, Class C Misdemeanor
– Possession of Paraphernalia, Class C Misdemeanor

Around 8:30 A.M. Saturday, Senior Trooper Jarrod Lents observed a black Toyota Avalon traveling eastbound on US 50 near Church Street.

The Toyota was traveling with the passenger wheels across the fog line, almost touching the grass.

Lents turned around behind the Toyota and followed it to observe additional driving behaviors; he later observed the vehicle cross over the center line and back over the white fog line numerous times.  Lents pulled the Toyota over on US 50, west of Hart Road.

While speaking to the driver, Lents could smell the odor of alcoholic beverages coming from within the vehicle.

Lents learned that Diehl and his 16 year old passenger had left a party in Bloomington and were trying to return home to Bedford, but had become lost.

Further investigation by Lents led him to determine that Diehl and smoked marijuana and taken Xanex only hours before being pulled over.  A search of the car by Lents unveiled a metal grinder with what was believed to be marijuana inside.

Martin County Deputies transported the 16 year old passenger to the jail to await the child’s mother to pick him up.  The minor was summoned into court for possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

Lents transported Diehl to the Daviess Community Hospital, where he presumably tested positive for having THC and benzodiazepines in his body.  Diehl was transported back to the Martin County Jail where he was lodged, without incident, on charges of operating while intoxicated with a minor passenger in the vehicle, maintaining a common nuisance, and neglect of a dependent, all Level 6 Felonies.
